Information Retrieval and Knowledge Engineering

“Information retrieval” is an umbrella term for those processes that seek information within large, often heterogeneous data collections. OrcaTec consultants are pioneers in the management and retrieval of unstructured information. We have developed large scale functional systems that rapidly identify relevant information, organize, and make it available to users. We have several patents, issued and pending, that provide innovative technology to help manage a variety of kinds of information and we are very aware of those tools that are available to solve specific kinds of information problems.

Knowledge Engineering is the process of working with sources and experts to elicit the information necessary to structure information. For example, we have worked with clients to construct taxonomies of specific subject areas and then to identify criteria by which documents can be classified into these categories.

We have helped clients address a variety of information problems beyond simple search and retrieval. For example, we have built or acquired tools for visualization of various kinds of unstructured information. We have identified sources of information and methods for using it.
